Plural Noun: Fundamentals
Def: A central or primary rule or principle on which something is based.
In the development of a solid program of recovery and especially in the transitional phase of care, it is vital to establish and practice a structure guided by fundamentals. The above definition of fundamental gives a clear basis for what is needed to experience success in recovery, a primary rule or principle on which something is based.
This something we are striving for is successful long-term recovery. The principles by which this is possible are delivered to us in a nice 12-step package. Building those long-term muscles takes effort and action, and some coaching and guidance.
We have all heard those infamous coaching words – "Work on the fundamentals", "Go back to the basics".
We have all cringed when we knew we needed to go back and practice the fundamentals. It meant practicing musical scales or layup drills or some repetitive beginning that produced a foundation that we built on to produce great results. We might not have liked it but when we did it, we got better and started to see improved results. The lesson plays out over and over and recovery is no different, we need to stay focused on the fundamentals or things start to fall apart.
The problem we all face, especially when looking within ourselves to find those areas we are not managing well, is we don't want to see them. We don't want to look at the bad stuff. That's no fun and it's a bit painful. That is why coaches and sponsors are so important. We need them to help us pinpoint and hold us accountable to those things we are missing or don't want to look at.
Helping our clients at The Arches develop and take action through the fundamentals of a solid recovery program is a powerful piece of the long-term miracle. The fundamentals must be in place and practiced on a daily basis. We help develop effective choices to build these fundamentals and to help bring about the growth and changes necessary to experience long-term, successful recovery.
What Needs To Be In Place For This To Happen?
Willingness is the key. It is the fundamental, fundamental. With willingness and action there will be results. If either one of them is missing it's difficult to make and real progress. It's hard to work on fundamentals when there is no willingness to do so or any action to apply the principles in our daily lives to practice and hone those miracle muscles.
Our clients do well when they are willing to practice and live within the fundamentals of The Arches Recovery Services Program and move forward with their 12-step work of Alcoholics Anonymous.
